The name “Icarus” came to me quite strongly upon completing this painting. The ancient Greek myth tells of a boy who had wings attached by wax, and he flew so close to the sun that the wax melted, thus making him plummet to his doom.
I do not see this painting as a literal illustration of that story, yet there is something about the radiance of the sun shining from within this Icarus that obliquely and poetically relates to the original myth. Here, we see a being made of light appearing to us amidst stark darkness, a vision of a holy being kneeling as an offering of service.
To me, I look at this picture and feel an elevated sense of hope and responsibility for the future. This sense emerges from settling the eyes on the light at his heart and allowing the experience of the painting to unfold from there.
