Renowned philosopher and teacher in the ancient city of Alexandria, Hypatia lived ~360 - 415 AD. She was widely recognized for her wisdom as a scholar in the great historic city of learning, a powerful female force in the context of an oppressively male-dominated culture.
She constructed devices known as "astrolabes," which had many uses, such as telling time based on the position of celestial objects. Though considered beautiful, she never married, and had many admiring students until she was murdered by political enemies. In this painting, I have depicted her glorified with astrolabe and scroll, pointing towards the stars which she surely loved.
